REFLECTION | CAPITOL HILL.

I was taking the time to think and reflect upon the events in Capitol Hill. The violence and riots by the pro-Trump supporters. As I first heard of the events, I didn’t realize the severity, the destruction and death that was caused, probably because I didn’t watch the news or read about the after-math. However, I was particularly upset when I heard of the destruction within Capitol Hill, not only because I have had the chance to view the wondrous structure of the Capitol Hill, Washington D. C., but also because of the history contained within.

Whilst the political unrest and the change of presidency is the source cause, I began to relate these events and destruction to the idea of human aggression. The retaliation of the human form. Particularly when there is a need or desire unmet. Agression is revealed in the form of anger, hate, trying to hurt another to get what one wants. Especially because survival feels threatened, and desires to fulfil the needs within.

With the political events we can see an overt act of aggression and reaction taking place, with the pro-Trump supporters who were also termed as the mob. A collective appeal with aggressive action that does not support the Presidential leadership change. But we can also see this within political leadership, where congress-members decided to resign, back and forth exchanges – including blame. As well as President Donald John Trump stating that he will not attend the inauguration of President-Elect Joseph Robinette Biden Jr. I felt saddened to hear about this. Especially as I think that it is good leadership to simply congratulate, show a sense of collective harmony and unity, as there is a transfer of power and inauguration ceremonies. As well as the Trump family to leave The White House on a positive note.

Whilst there has been political turmoil, unrest and questions surrounding the election result, it is only fair to say that President Trump did take an oath to serve the United States of America, national and international. Aggressive and unkind gestures simply are suggestive of his own aggression of unfulfillment. Aggressive action is linked to human impulses for human survival (Klein & Riviere, 1964, p. 6). Actions and attempts such as these can also be viewed as cry-outs for love, to gain a sense of humanization. To know that one is of value and appreciated.

It is with these thoughts I continue to reflect upon the political unrest in Capitol Hill. I wish for a smooth transition of leadership for the leadership for President Trump and family and also President-Elect Joseph Biden and family.

Update | After taking the time to reflect upon my original thoughts I began to think about the intersection of President Trump’s impeachment and his decision not to attend the inauguration of President – Elect Joseph R. Biden JR.

Notes | These thoughts were originally hand-written on January 16th 2020 and updated on January 17th 2020.
