9th Summit of the Americas – IX Cumbre de las Américas!

I would like to take the time to wish all the best for the 9th Summit of the America – IX Cumbre de las Américas that is taking place in Los Angeles, California, USA between the June 6-10, 2022. This Summit that is organized by the host country America is an opportunity for leaders of nations to discuss vital issues that affect the countries within North America, Central America, South America and the Caribbean. These are countries collectively known as the Organization of the American States (OAS). However, there are many countries’ leaders such as Venezuela, Nicaragua, Cuba, Guatemala and Bolivia that have declined to attend.

While it maybe a good idea not to attend given that there are hostilities, tensions and anger, especially connected to the USA sanctions upon Venezuela at this time, it may be better for countries’ leaders from Venezuela and those whom support Venezuela not to attend. But of-course this does not mean to say that room for dialogues and diplomacy should not exist, especially for the need of discussion mediators and facilitators. As of June 7th 2022 we have also learned that the President of Mexico has also declined to attend.

I found it interesting that the theme for this summit is “Building a Sustainable, Resilient, and Equitable Future” and wondered how the conversations can be developed without the critical voices of nations that have declined to attend, given that these are topics of great concern. But I also think that the current Russia and Ukraine invasion / war has much to do with deciding to attend or not. Given that relations between China and Russia exist within the OAS. But then I wondered how do relations with China and Russia within South America affect summits such as 9th Summit of the Americas – IX Cumbre de las Américas? We can also think about party politics such as Democratic and Republican that have influenced such decisions.

Nevertheless, there is much more to reflect upon, such as the Southern U.S. Mexico Border and migrations. But I know that there is a deep need for The United States of America to protect, preserve, maintain, develop and strengthen Western Hemispheric relations and in-particular with South America.

To all the countries that have decided to attend the summit I wish you all the very best and look forward to hearing of the outcomes, summit action items, future goals and so on.
