The Coronavirus, COVID-19 global / international pandemic has taken a toll upon human life, health and wellness. Whilst the populations of nations have been advised to stay-at-home as much as possible, this advisory is causing adjustments to day-to-day life, or the disruption of ones routine. The idea of adjustment was a point of discussion within my previous thoughts from a business / economic view. In continuation with this thread, I would like to focus on the individual, or at the level of the personal. Adjustments or life as we know it has changed. A little for some and more drastic for others. There is a fragility to health and well-being, at the physical and personal level; where we can’t ignore and wonder what a public health crisis as this would do to the human psych.
Of course it is important to stabilize, contain, and control. Ensure that everyone is feeling safe, but the ripples of adjustment take time, and will effect ones emotional well-being. We can think of words such as: anxious, depressed, alone or sad. This is especially because as humans we put a certain amount of expectation upon the self. We desire. We pursue, and we want to feel purposeful. It’s our existential desire. To do more, be more, as we also fulfil our survival. We want to thrive and we are driven. Propelled with purpose.
Now all of a sudden, this purpose has somewhat been eliminated, reduced or down graded. Of course we do hope and believe that these circumstances are temporary, but at this moment in time, we are living through a health emergency crisis. Even if our survival is put at the forefront of everything else, taking care of our health and well-being, then we’ve accomplished a goal. This is what should drive us as we adjust. Let’s take the time to be grateful that we are safe, surviving, and will continue to thrive through this period of adjustment.
