I wanted to take the time to reflect upon the recent Biden – Putin summit that was held in Switzerland, Geneva at the Parc de la Grange on June 16th 2021. President Joseph Biden JR., stated that President Vladimir Putin is a worthy adversary, and in earlier comments as having no soul. Whilst at first I did take a critical lens, and wrote from a socio-political point of view, the fact that the summit went well prompted a positive shift, to reckon that maybe an adversary can turn into a friend.

It is difficult especially as the Putin Presidency / Government was involved with the chemical attacks in Syria, and always assisting Syrian President Bashar al-Assad to hurt his own people. There is probably much more to mention, but the chemical attack created horror, and I wondered why instances such as these don’t capture worldwide attention from social-political movements?

With an agreement with President Biden the success of a summitt is measured with due-course and time after meetings have been held. I do think that a Biden-Putin conference should have been held together after the summit meetings took place. Simply to acknowledge each others presence, endeavours, and to publically signal the beginning of a successful summit.

I appreciated the photograph opportunity of leaders together sitting in a room where the summit took place. Which reminded me of my own graduation picture, with lots of books in the background, as well as my Russian immigrant friend from many years earlier. We would sit together in-class and help each other with assignments. I appreciated the location of the summit that offered a point of neutrality, as it was neither leaders home country. I found the link of the location interesting, as Geneva is where the headquarters of The International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent (IFRC) exists.

IFRC – The IFRC and the IFRC national societies are known for their world-renowned humanitarian efforts, action and assistance in all-sides of the hemisphere, including war zones of Syria and human-made humanitarian disasters such as Venezuela (Hussain, 2020). Maybe this connection is a type of silent summit, to take note of the unsaid. To hint of hope for the end of Chemical weapons of mass destruction and the creation of horrific hurts? Whilst it can be a very difficult moment to believe also as a worthy adversary, it is important to take note of the International Humanitarian, Human Rights and Refugee Law in the context of armed conflict (2004). Where a previous enemy or adversary who is no longer taking part in wars or conflict must be treated with dignity and respect (2004, p. 8).

Russia was a crucial ally to assist the Spanish Crown, King Fernando VII to finally put an end to the French invasion of Spain, which was a great source of tension that fluttered to the United States and the Spanish territories of the Americas (Gibson, 2009, p. 175).

Soul – The Biden-Putin summit success will be determined in the days, months ahead. The summit location and the history that I have noted offer hope. To realize that we all have a soul. In my view our soul requires love and tenderness, especially as we give to each other in our various forms. The soul can be damaged and hurt as it is led astray as a simple example we can think of drug abuse, or the psychological trauma of events / wars that one has experienced and so on.
