On July 8th 2020 the President of Mexico Andrés Manuel López Obrador arrived in the United States of America to sign the USMCA – The United States – Mexico and Canada Agreement with President Donald J. Trump. This is a free – trade agreement between the three nations entitled as: North America. Whilst I think that the signing of the agreement should have taken place with the presence of all three nations’ leaders – I was inspired to see the happiness of the President López Obrador, and his delegation, hosted by America. With the visits of the monuments such as the Abraham Lincoln Memorial. Where the President López Obrador acknowledged the historical links between President Abraham Lincoln and President Benito Juárez of Mexico’s union after the civil war.

I further began to think how this visitation is linked or not to the recent toppling of statues – especially that of Christopher Columbus. Whilst I have commented upon this in previous writings, I think that those who do topple him down have to understand that even if one believes that there are harsh histories with Columbus – without his expeditions how would have America come to be known within the ages of expeditions and explorations? Even with his findings it is also important to note that Columbus’ intention was to sail to China. He was excited to find treasures of the far-East. But limited probably because of mapping skills of the era, his boats sailed to the coasts of The Bahamas, christening the island as San Salvador. What we can then say is that Columbus’ discovery of the America’s was probably purely by chance. It was just meant to be.

So once again we are forced to think if toppling or signing bills to take down monuments is the right answer? It is probably the easiest move, since as they say: out of sight, out of mind. But is that really true? What statues / monuments, or any kind of sculpture; and in the contexts of this writing, any historical artifacts allow individuals to do: is to think, reflect. Become reflective of what is being viewed. A reckoning. Creating a relationship between the viewer and the artifacts. This allows for something to take place within the mind. The act of viewership does not place an agreement or disagreement, but allows the viewer to inquire within.

The erasure-ship and even the individuals who believe that they have achieved something, with what we could call violent acts. A form of radicalism, have to also note that there are various buildings / sculptures and memorials all across the world that have been created by slaves, the slang word for Slavic people. Would the same individuals / groups think to destroy those? Maybe or maybe not? But we might hear that these were created by the hands of the ancestors and need to be preserved. Well then we also could say the same for statues such as Christopher Columbus. Because individuals also have ancestors related to Columbus, belonging to the Spanish / European ancestry, history.

Question: Why is the difference between The Ages of Expeditions / Explorations, Slavery and Confederacy important to decipher with?
Thank you! It is with these thoughts I would like to take a moment and embrace the optimism presented and exchanged between the two leaders and this that is it promising to see a progression of political alliances / agreements especially amidst the Coronavirus health pandemic. Once again as the leaders of America and Mexico both conveyed, it would have been nice to see all three nations to sign the USMCA document together. Congratulations USMCA!
