As Senior Senator for Florida Marco Rubio (R-FL) has expressed his deep concern and caution for President Joseph R. Biden Jr’s invitation to the President of Cuba, His Excellency Miguel Díaz-Canel. I would like to share that I certainly share your sentiment of concern, especially to recognize homeland security, given the designations of the United States of America upon Cuba.
I am sure that if such a visit was extended to Cuba’s President / Cuban delegation, that specific measures to protect America’s security would be taken up. And that the agreement of such a visit would also mean that Cuba’s President has agreed to some-kind of conditions. Furthermore, the Presidential invitation from President Biden reminded me of the 6th American President John Quincy Adams who was a member of the Whig party (Ferrer, 2021; Gibson, 2019), and the Monroe Doctrine which specified America’s stake in Cuba. Of course at the time there was interest upon Cuba’s annexation to the United States of America, and also as Quincy had once said: “the ripe apple of Cuba would fall from the tree and into that of America’s eager embrace” (Ferrer, 2021, p. 95).
I know that to draw a parallel from the historical desire of Cuba’s annexation to the U.S. and the meeting invitation from President Biden may sound absurd; but I think the alignment recognizes America’s once desired natural connection with Cuba, to also become a “part of the United States of America” (2021, p. 84). It is with these thoughts that I would respect any-kind of invitation from President Biden and response / indication(s) from Cuba’s President / Administration.
I also reflected upon your thoughts contained within the 4th paragraph of your letter addressed to President Biden with the concern of “the oath you have sworn, to protect America from foreign enemies” (Rubio, 2023). I thank you most deeply for bringing this to our attention, especially as we think about activities that happen, that are not put at our forefront. If you may, may I utilize the words “under-way” where this too also asserts to maintain the taking of the oath.
