As schools begin to re-open, or think about re-openings amidst the Coronavirus and emerging from COVID-19, I began to think about this idea of – going to school. Physically from home to school. From one place to another. The importance of this can vary from lets say K-12 to the higher levels, such as university to doctoral student. For instance: the going to school allows for the process of socialization, the building of social / emotional skills, literacy, stimulation of the intellect, from the early years.

“Teaching and mentoring is of value as it allows us to govern students, so that one day they will be able to govern themselves. We foster values. We teach values. These are necessary for the freedoms that we want to cultivate.”
Shazia S. Hussain
Whilst of course the process of socialization possesses positive and negative effects. It is this going to and from, home to school, that creates a sense of belonging, attachment to land, to community and creating relationships. Also for allowing parents to also go to a place. Such as, work, education, training, business, or returning to home, working from home, teaching and learning from home, or fulfilling the role of the care-giver, parent, or guardian.
This going-to is simply a form of societal organization, that encompasses the facts that I have conveyed within my thoughts. As we go through the stages, there arrives the idea of blended learning, or on-line learning. Which are accommodative, and allow for flexibility as we progress through the years. But even as we allow for these, there is always the beauty associated with in-person learning. Where the human mind becomes attached to other minds. To think, feel, sense, build upon, and to allow for the flow of ideas. The flowing mind, the intuition. Which can further develop within the silence. To hear the voice from within the soul.
From these thoughts we can summarize that the levels of integrative forms, from in-person learning, blended to on-line vary, as we progress through the years. Of course there are many various views that pertain to schooling, such as home schooling, or even the very need for schooling. But with these views we are called to think about the views of scholars, specialists, cognitive and developmental, to name a few as follows:
- Sigmund Freud – Austrian Neurologist, who was the founder of psycho-analysis
- Erik Erikson – Theories related to the interactions of biology and environment
- Jean Piaget – Swiss Psychologist – Theories to describe children’s intellectual development
- Lev Vygotsky – Socio – cultural theory of child development
- Albert Bandura – Cognitive and social – learning theory, emphasis upon learning through observations
Summary Points: As schools decide if it is the right time to reopen, we are inclined to lean back upon the theories of schooling, to question what are, or how do health pandemics effect, and take a toll upon the human organizations of society. What is the need for schooling? And how the need to learn is actually taking care of a vital within our human body – The Brain.
