On March 31st it is the Cesár Chavez Federal Commemorative holiday. This is a day that was first proclaimed by the 44th President of the United States of America, President Barack Obama Hussein. Cesar Chávez Day is also known as Día de César Chávez in Spanish. On this day I take the time to remember the excitement as I first learned of Cesar Chávez’ contributions as a Mexican-American Civil Rights Leader, and his work with Dolores Huerta (Dolores Clara Fernández Huerta). They were both known for their advocacy for the rights of farm workers, and established the National Farm Workers Association (NFWA) in 1962, and merged with Agricultural Workers Organizing Committee (AWOC), to become the United Farm Workers in 1966. March 31st recognizes Cesar Chávez’ (1927-1993) birthday and his legacy. Chávez was married to Helen Fabela Chávez. I wondered if Dolores Huerta a living legend pioneer should also be included within this recognition? Especially for their passionate desires to improve: labor, working conditions, civil rights movements with non-violent means, integrated with human dignity. I also connected this day to that of my recent writing upon Agriculture, travel, tourism and hospitality. Wishing everyone that celebrates and commemorates a very happy Cesar Chávez Day!
