Each year the Roland Garros tournament takes place in France. We all have our favourite athlete who we cheer on and would like to see win, a win for a home country and sometimes it is that deserving athlete who we believe is worthy of a win. Whilst this thought might be overdue because the Roland Garros tournament is over, I decided to write it anyway.
I was saddened to learn of the passing of Stefanos Tsitsipas’ grandmother who passed away on the day of the French Open final. He was informed just before the match began. I felt that the tournament officials should have done more to support him, as well as encouragement from Novak Djokovic, who went on to win the Roland Garros mens singles title.

It was also great to view support for Naomi Osaka’s withdrawal decision from various tennis tournaments. I wondered about the many other athletes who decide to withdraw from tennis due to injury, and why there is never any mention of support. Simple saying that maybe consistency needs to be developed from tournament organizations, as it is the inconsistencies that reveal the internal biases towards athletes that exist within the sport.
