The truth is that I decided to begin to watch the T.V. historical drama entitled The Spanish Princess. Just because I haven’t watched a series for years and years – and when I say that I do actually mean, years and years. As I began to watch, I was mezmerized by the beautiful historical costumes, designs, jewels, intrigued and admired The Spanish Princess: Catherine of Aragon’s deep commitment, strength and courage to place the love of her nation, with the creation of an alliance. However, as the story unfolds we come to realize the many plots, schemes, that exist that are leading to the betrayal of the Spanish Princess, Catherine. Her courageous spirit and heart are admirable qualities that leaderships desire for.

The heartaches, betrayals, destruction, death, bloodshed are most of the time terrifying. But I continued to watch, with the hope that there would be life, happiness, and desires fulfilled from the heart. As I have not concluded the series – I cannot provide an overall review or rating per se. But I am sure that I will continue to watch simply because as much as I am interested in the storyline, I felt like my brain was becoming bombarded, especially because of the violent scenes. But it can be expected especially because of the 18+ rating anyway. What continues to draw me, is the storyline, costumes, landscapes, historical architecture and the letter writing that carries on throughout, as the main mechanism for communication.
Within the contexts of the series, I realized that trust is very important. As one places a letter in someones hand to deliver to another – because letter writing was the way thoughts were conveyed, and messages were delivered back and forth. Today we can think about letter writing, how we place trust in the postal services, and the men / women who deliver mail to the receivers. Even in this present time, we can connect back to history to understand the trust that is placed with mail sending and receiving. Of course other forms of communications have developed at present day, which enhance trust levels, such as electronic mail (email), but also technological advancements that have allowed for tracking numbers, so hopefully nothing gets lost in the mail.

There is an ability to track, trace, and keep personal records. But should the art of letter writing as a form of communication be totally diminished? I am thinking in terms of hand-writing letters. In a world of feeling fast paced – the Coronavirus has allowed and even forced individuals to slow down. Maybe challenging at first for some, but with time, there is ease found through the adjustment process. As I have tried to always hand-write my blogs and enjoy hand-writing my letters, I have found value within this practice. Maybe we could call it an ancient art, or the ancient art of letter writing. But what I appreciate the most about writing a personal letter, is the ability to express oneself, without the verbal back and forth verbal exchanges that might feel intrusive or deemed and intrusion. But rather to reflect upon the words that have been received, and then provide a response.

So really we can conclude that there are +/- for any kind of communication. Misunderstandings or even the way the human mind construes or formulates meanings, will often require contact between the sender and receiver. As we continue to think about methods for communication, it’s quite obvious that there are also +/- to watching any kind of historical dramas. Love, lusts, costumes, designs, traditions, murders, hate and betrayal are some of the topics that are found, similar to William Shakespeares dramatic plays.
